Hello friend,
For my birthday I'm asking for donations to the Giving What We Can Global Health and Wellbeing Fund. This fund is important to me for two reasons:
(1) I'm appalled by the recent dismantling of USAID under the Trump administration, and our own government's decision to cut foreign aid. The sudden withdrawal of funds from health and wellbeing programs, mostly in the global south, will cause suffering, cost lives, and is counterproductive in promoting peace and stability. Reputable organisations and funds are stepping in to help plug the gaps as best they can, and I want to contribute to that effort.
(2) I care about targeting help to where it makes the most difference, and evidence-based approaches to measuring this. Studies show that giving to the world's most cost-effective charities can make your donations go literally hundreds of times further than if you unwittingly gave to one of the less effective charities. GWWC has a very strong reputation in the effective giving space. Giving to their general Global Health and Wellbeing Fund, rather than to one specific charity, means they can use their expertise to target the money to some of the most effective, impactful interventions. I've met some of the people who run GWWC, and trust me, they know their stuff and they're really good eggs —at a time when eggs are a valuable commodity! :p
GWWC is registered as a charity in the UK so your donation is tax deductible. I know times are tough and totally understand if you can't make a donation. But if you really want to give me a birthday present, this is what I'd like!
Thank you.
